This project is about the fate of detainees made by Dutch and Australian forces during their NATO mission in Uruzgan. The investigation started with a veteran who told us a chilling story. He had transferred a detainee, that was abused before his eyes, but he wasn’t allowed to intervene. When inquiring what would happen to the detainee, his boss at that time told him: "If you are very quiet and you wait a little longer, you will hear it for yourself." He concluded: it means he will be executed.
It was the starting point for a project that took more than two years. The results were published here, with Dutch newspaper Trouw.
In Germany the involvement of German arms in the war in Yemen was controversial. But, until we started our investigation the official position of the government was that they are “not aware of German arms used in Yemen.” With #GermanArms (part of #EUarms project) we therefore focussed on arms delivered to the UAE and KSA, and found extensive proof of them being used in Yemen.

In collaboration with NRC, a leading Dutch newspaper, investigated the activities of Damen. We spoke to dozens of current and former employees, diplomats and experts. We have filed FOI requests and traveled to West Africa to investigate Damen's business there.

A collective of journalists set up a makeshift newsroom in Amsterdam. They opened their laptops and set to work, for two weeks straight, in the #DutchArms bootcamp. The aim was simple: to track and trace the Dutch global arms trade.
The outcome in terms of story and impact were better than we expected. It resulted in numerous stories, a courtcase and a political debates. So, we decided to continue this project in Europe. #EUarms already visited Italy, Germany and Belgium.

Dust storms are not the only consequence of water scarcity. To the north of Ahvaz lies a barren plain. It is hard to imagine that until recently this was lush and green, that you could take a boat through the vast wetland and hear birdsong.
